Sound.

One word's journey through music — from the barricade to the bank card.

Music is the only public ledger that recorded every stage of the word "Revolut". Protest shorthand on a 1995 twelve-inch. A trademark in 2015. Street currency across European rap by 2023. A verb by 2026. This page racks the evidence like a crate of seven-inch singles — every sleeve carries a fact-status badge, in the same discipline as the book this crate belongs to. Not one lyric is quoted anywhere on this page: titles identify, prose describes, the words stay with their writers.

Run-out groove

  • "to revolut", verb — Ireland2026

Total running time: fifty-eight years. The word never changed its spelling — only its owner. And the ghost of Bajja Jedd's 1995 twelve-inch keeps the crate honest — filed in the liner notes, where ghosts belong.

Revolut.

The word before the brand. It belonged to the barricade.

The canon shelf. Four pressings across forty-seven years where the word means what it says — a mass event with consequences, sung about, argued over, resold as a t-shirt. The 1995 ragga twelve-inch that already cut it down to Revolut lives on this page too, but as a ghost in the liner notes on Side C: filed for what it is — the missing link nobody digitised.

A Company /
Takes the
Word.

July 2015, Level39, Canary Wharf: an app launches under a name that reads as revolution with the ending cut off. One honesty note: no founder statement of that etymology sits on the record — so this page states it as an observation about the wordform, not an attributed origin story. It hardly needs one. The 1995 ragga twelve-inch (see Side C) proves the street had already made the identical cut; what changed in 2015 is not the shape of the word but its ownership. Within a year The Guardian was calling the app revolutionising — the press heard the pun instantly (S8).

03Side B · 2020–2026

The word after the brand. Now it means the card.

By 2023 the word is back on record sleeves across Europe — the Spanish-language scene, the Lusophone club circuit, Romanian manele, francophone Caribbean, Czech hip-hop, Romanian trap. By 2026, South London. And it never means barricades. It means the card. One more thing worth saying out loud: in American rap the money-app slot belongs to CashApp and Venmo; in European street music, this word took it. The continent's underground flexes a European card — which is, in its own quiet way, an answer to the question on this book's cover.

CROWNUK · Lambethprod. .nathan. & ChefBkay · FFM·REVOLUT

The crown of Side B — and not an obscurity. A South London rapper whose mixtape blair babies was called one of the most important UK rap albums of 2025 (S3) presses a single titled after the card. The register is arrival: the rewards of progression, charted against adversity (S2). And the date is the part nobody could have scripted: the single landed the same week the poster campaign went up across the same city, asking the question on this crate's spine. Nobody planned the rhyme — which is exactly why it counts.

Same / Sound.
Different Word.

The word's other lives.

Homophones, near-misses, and the one true ghost — the 1995 twelve-inch nobody properly digitised. Filed here so the crate stays honest.

Revolú

Rauw Alejandro & Feid, 2024. In Caribbean Spanish, revolú means chaos, a loud party, a commotion — same phonetics, different planet. A reminder that a wordform can host unrelated tenants (S9).

We the People

Rock canon, various. The word "revolution" bleeds across a bar line so often you can hear revolut-i-on — the truncation hiding in plain sight long before anyone trademarked it. Music kept making the cut; only one entity filed the paperwork.

On Revolute

Dave Weiner, 2010 — robotics: a joint with one degree of freedom. Revolute Records, RR0510-2. The perfect run-out groove for this set — a twelve-minute instrumental that sends the needle into the label groove (S11). Katey Brooks, 2019 — botany: a leaf curled back for protection (S10). Quieter, precise lives, far from both barricade and bank.

The Revolut Man

Hulton, Bristol, 2025. Paid his way across campus signing students up to the app for referral bonuses, became university folklore under the nickname "Revolut Man", then converted the nickname into a rap career (S6). A one-man Generation Three: guerrilla marketing, unpaid, for the brand — see the wall.

Reported

Bajja Jedd — Revolut (1995)

The one true ghost. A ragga-hip-hop twelve-inch — Radio / Flip Squad / Instrumental / Acapella — where Revolut is already the whole title and still means revolution: the subtitle stands for the ghetto youths. The truncation predates the fintech by twenty years. Never properly digitised. It stays a page-only sleeve because some records refuse to stream (S1).

05Run-out groove

The word becomes a verb. The verb means "to pay".

In July 2026, Fortune reported the terminal station: in Ireland, "to revolut" now simply means to transfer money, pay for something or split a bill — the same verbification milestone Google passed in America in 2002 (S4). Fifty-eight years of running time, then: 1968, the word wanted barricades. 1995, it stood for the ghetto youths. 2026, it is a verb meaning "to pay" — and the man who owns it tells the press he needs to wear a suit.

Every revolution ends as an institution. Not every institution keeps the receipts.

Side A has ended. Side B is still spinning. Side C is where the ghosts live — you can hear the run-out groove clicking, waiting for the needle lift. Or the flip.
